Field Marshal Montgomery" - Photograph Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery in liberated Copenhagen in 1945. The photograph of the legendary field marshal when he is visiting a week after the liberation was taken by Ernst Henriksson. The British war hero made a name for himself during World War II when he did what everyone thought was impossible - defeat German commander Rommel, the "Desert Fox", in the North African desert. Rommel was considered invincible until the Battle of el-Alamein where Montgomery outsmarted the Germans. The battle had more moral than military significance - it was possible to beat the successful Germans. "Monty" was generally considered buffoonish and difficult to deal with but was loved by his soldiers. Montgomery was later involved in planning the Normandy landings.
